Katherina Rios Luna
April 2003 - 23 years old
She was tragically killed in a bus accident in April 2003 while going back to work to Moquegua after spending the Easter holidays in Puno, Peru. She was 23 years old, a third year undergrad archaeology student at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and was a sweet, talented and adventurous person with a love for the quechua language and travelling to all kinds of places with whom I had the pleasure and fun to work side by side on several occasions (including our famous course "Metodos de investigacion 1" essentially learning to dig at the Inca site of Pueblo Viejo in the Lurin valley where we were literally up to our elbows in ash after finding a large hearth). We shall miss her greatly, not only as a colleague but also as a friend.
In May 2003, many students and teachers were celebrating the end of an archaeology conference by having a few beers. I held up my glass and said "To Kathy, who should have been here with us now" Fellow student Maria Helena said "She is with us right now" How right she was...
