Archaeology Field School Description
Linfield College, Portland State University and US Fish and Wildlife Service: 2010 Summer Archaeology Field School at Bachelor Island on the Columbia River (Portland, Oregon) June 14th-July 10 (Mon-Sat weekly), 5 credits This project will document archaeological sites eroding from the cutbanks at Bachelor Island, where recent radiocarbon dating indicates occupation to over 2,400 years ago. The focus of this course is on site identification and documentation, but we will also be auguring and screening. We will also be traveling by canoe and inflatable raft to explore some of the wetlands for archaeological potential. There will also be a number of guest lecturers. Students will learn: * use of GPS in field survey * identifying artifacts and ecofacts * identifying features and sites * documenting archaeological sites * the 'landscape archaeology' approach * site survey techniques * soil classification and description * artifacts, feature and site sketching * field analysis of common artifacts types * scientific field photography * field map-making * and more Total cost=$1,600 ($320 x 5 credits + $100 lab fee) Logistics: Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge is about 45 minutes from Portland, OR. There will be arranged transportation to and from Portland to the refuge daily. We will begin fieldwork at 8am and will be back in Portland by 4pm.
