Archaeology Field School Description
We are the oldest established Field School in Ireland (founded in 1991) and have to date trained hundreds of North American, European & Irish students in academic and practical aspects of Irish Archaeology. Many of our former students have gone on to successful careers in archaeology in the USA, Canada, Europe and Ireland, while others have continued their education at Irish Universities. Hands-on' training in archaeological methodology is provided by our resident instructors in various fields of expertise e.g. excavation methodology, digital surveying and mapping, planning, processing and conservation of artefacts, report writing and research skills. Weekly lectures are given by the AFS staff and/or visiting lecturers from Irish universities. Interim Reports on the excavations at Slievemore and other sites are produced on an annual basis and the site has been published in various Irish and US journals, with a major publication on the Deserted Village and the Bronze Age Round Houses scheduled for 2010.
