Field School DescriptionArchaeological documentation of wreckage tentatively identified as from the steamer Joseph S. Fay, lost 10/19/1905. A large section of hull structure is located on the beach just NW of the 40-Mile Point lighthouse, and additional wreckage is submerged in 15 feet of water immediately offshore. Travel to and from Alpena Michigan is the responsibility of the participants. 50% deposit (75) is due with application. Full payment is due upon acceptance and no later than 30 days prior to start of field school. Study of late 19th century and early 20th century shipwrecks in the Great Lakes forms the backbone of maritime history data for the period. Getting a chance to study this architecture up close on a beach is an added bonus. |
