    Field School Description

Archaeological documentation of wreckage tentatively identified as from the steamer Joseph S. Fay, lost 10/19/1905. A large section of hull structure is located on the beach just NW of the 40-Mile Point lighthouse, and additional wreckage is submerged in 15 feet of water immediately offshore. Project goal is to photograph and draw to scale all visible wreckage to produce a site plan, structural cross sections, and obtain pertinent data to establish a positive identification for the site.

    Summary

The Great Lakes are a major shipwreck reservoir of architectural information. Study of late 19th century and early 20th century shipwrecks in the Great Lakes forms the backbone of maritime history data for the period. Getting a chance to study this architecture up close on a beach is an added bonus.
