Berkeley Professor Sarah Stroup, University of Washington at Seattle Professor Elizabeth Bloch-Smith, Villanova University Field School DescriptionIn June, 2006, an international consortium directed by Professor Ilan Sharon (Hebrew University) will resume excavation at one of the richest and most spectacular sites in coastal Israel. King Solomon's principal harbor, a major Canaanite, Sea Peoples, Phoenician, Jewish, Assyrian, Persian, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine city, and a Crusader fortress, Tel Dor offers a unique opportunity for volunteers to learn the techniques of modern field archaeology from experienced excavators. In 2006 the Dor consortium will resume excavation and scientific sampling of the Roman, Hellenistic, Persian, and Iron Age levels on the south side of the site, paying specific attention to its urban development, monumental buildings, dwelling houses, and palaeoenvironment; will continue to investigate the impact upon the city s native Phoenician-Israelite culture of contact with/conquest by outside powers, especially Persians, Athenians, Macedonians, and Romans; will continue the conservation of the Roman hoField school web site:sscl.berkeley.edu/~teldor/ Field School Size: 26-50 Minimum age: 18 Is prior experience required?: No Recommended experience: No experience required; volunteers must be reasonably fit, and willing to work and to learn Traditional Photography: Yes Digital Photography: Yes Excavation Survey Techniques: Yes Interpreting stratigraphy: Yes Resortation conservation architecture: Yes Artifact analysis: Yes Report writing: Yes Evening Lectures: A full program of evening lectures and classes is offered Is travel during free time restricted?: No Additional information for students: No rain days! Hotel amenities available; mini-market, restaurants, snack bars, and beach close by. Easy taxi access to Faradis and Zikhron Ya'akov and to nearby bus stop on the main Haifa-Tel Aviv road. Fees are inclusive of room and board and Dor consortium dig fees: $3095 for full season; $1995 for half season; student discounts available.
