Field School Description

Excavations are at the Monte Sannace Archaeological Park, under the direction of the Park archaeologists. We will be working in the lower town, a "middle class" habitation area, where last year we found an older town wall (6th century, Peuceti-era town) and later Greek influenced town features which include the visible town lay-out where we uncovered four sarcophigi with burial goods in secondary burial locations. We are completing excavations begun over 50 years ago. All excavation techniques taught in classroom lectures are American style, but in the field we respect the Italian style methodology. There are translators at all times, and we carry out field programs at the site, as well as the lab work. It is a rare site - an undeveloped site that dates to the town of indigenous populations prior to Greek contact which was then adapted to the Greek ideal.
We work at the site, have a break for "pranzo" (a slightly modified Italian mid-day meal, complete with coffee) at the site, rest a bit, then resume our day on work days. Lab is held in the nearby building which also has the rest rooms.
Free time, field trips and lectures are scheduled into the three weeks - it is an intensive schedule in that many activities are provided in this time span.

Program transportation is provided, to the site and to nearby sites on field trips. We will also pick you up at the airport if the timimg is reasonable (i.e., on the first and last days of the program).
The schedule will cover lectures (both by myself - Walker - and by Italian archeologists, with translators), field trips, and free time. Often the trip to the site at Metaponto (a very Greek style town) is in combination with the remainder of the day being spent at the beach on the Ionian Sea.
Rain days may be either lab work or free time - it depends on what's happening at that moment in time. Schedules are prone to change at any given time.
