Alaska - Paleoindian Archaeology in the Alaska/Yukon Borderlands

Application Deadline: 15 May 2008
Field School Location: Scottie Creek, Alaska/Beaver Creek, Yukon
Time periods to be studied: Paleoindian and early Holocene (Denali Complex, Northern Archaic)
***** Field School Summary *****: The Little John Paleoindian Site is one of the oldest archaeological sites in North America, recently dated to 12,020 C14 years (14,000 calendar years) before present. It contains the remains of early lithic assemblages but also well-preserved animal bones, including bison, elk, and caribou, allowing us to reconstruct the subsistence of some of the earliest colonizers of eastern Beringia (today Alaska and the adjacent Yukon Territory). The deeply stratified deposits containing these bones have become trapped in a swale between two large bedrock knobs. Students participating in the Little John field school will be helping to reconstruct important data for one of the earliest sites relevant to the peopling of eastern Beringia and the New World and the extinction of Ice Age mammals.

Alaska - UAF 2008 Archaeological Field School: Tanana Basin Archaeology at Gerstle River

Application Deadline: May 9, 2008
Field School Location: Gerstle River, Alaska
Time periods to be studied: 12,000-8000 cal BP
***** Field School Summary *****: Gerstle River is a multicomponent site consisting of 8 components dating from 12,000 to 3,800 cal BP in deeply buried stratified contexts in the mid Tanana Basin, near Delta Junction, Alaska. Over the last 4 years, we have excavated over 100 square meters and recovered over 10,000 lithic artifacts, including microcores and microblades, projectile points, bifaces, burins, various scrapers, etc., multiple individuals of wapiti and bison, and a mammoth ivory point, many in association with 13 hearths from the lower components. This is clearly one of the most significant sites in Alaska, offering us the opportunity to examine site structure at the level of activity area. The 2008 excavation and field school at Gerstle River is designed to expand on activity areas and hearths already excavated and to excavate the edge of the bluff prior to erosion and collapse. We expect to recover numerous lithic and faunal remains and associated hearth features. This will give the students of the field school an unparalleled opportunity to participate in a cutting edge excavation of an important site, using modern archaeological equipment and techniques that will be valuable to them in their future work and classes.

We are now accepting applications for volunteers. Oral history associates this site with the arrival of people from Fiji. There has been a permanent village at the site for around 1500 years. The cultural deposit excavated in 2005/2006 by ASPA is about 1m thick and includes foundations, pavements, postmoulds, lithic workshops, middens, and burials. The preservation of faunal materials on this site is exceptional compared to most other sites in Samoa, and ASPA Archaeology expects to recover materials that will greatly improve our current understanding of the way that prehistoric Samoans used their natural resources.
