The 2005 Edition of the
Comprehensive Archaeology Field School Directory

  • Running a Field School in 2005?
  • Do you want to reach an international audience interested in exactly what your program teaches?
  • Would you like to instantly get the word out about your Field School through the worlds largest network of archaeologists and anthropologists with 8,500 active members?
  • Does spending less than the price of two Marshalltowns® seem like a fair price to reach this audience?

Then this is where you can accomplish that goal.

*A 2004 edition of the Field School Directory was not originally planned. Due to inquiries I received at the SAA's in April 2004 though I decided to put together this 2004 edition to facilitate the announcement of Field Schools with a late application date, or those Field Schools which need to fill still open slots after their deadlines have passed. Submissions for the larger 2005 edition which has and estimated release date of November-December 2004 is ongoing.

What are some problems with conventional advertising of Field Schools?

  • Print publications have limited distribution within your target audience and charge high fees for ad space OR students have to buy them (and we know their income level!)
  • Web sites can be useful...if your prospective participants can actually find them. A recent search on google for [archaeology "field school"] returned 20,800 listings with dates going back to 1994. It's hard for your Field School to be found in that jungle.

Why is this 8,500 member network better than other mediums?

Unhampered by these limitations the 8,500 member mailing list "Shovel Bum's" is more efficient in targeting the audience you need because it uses the easiest & fastest medium available, e-mail. When compiled, this directory will be sent as a text based e-mail to the 8,500 members where it is then easily shared with a simple click. Just ask any of your students which of these are they most likely to do:

  • Photocopy an ad for field school and mail it to friends.
  • Cut and paste a link for a web site with the message "check this out when you have a chance"
  • Or click "forward" and send this directory received by e-mail on to their extensive buddy list. This comprehensive directory will also be available for free on the web and for purchase as a bound volume.

In addition to the easily shared e-mail going out this directory will also be available for later reference on this high traffic widely recognized, niche specialty, web site.

So who is on this 8,500 member list, and why are they interested in your Field School?

Shovel Bum's is comprised of an international audience of undergrad's, grads, and professionals working in the field of archaeology, CRM business, and academic staffs. Everyone of these members somehow interacts with others who are interested in gaining experience through Field Schools. Students who are eager to find the perfect Field School to hone their skills frequently ask professors and professionals "Where should I go ? Who is running a Field School on this type of site ". Unfortunately sometimes these mentors only know of a few, and very possibly not even one that is in the students area of interest (quick - give me the name of a contact and pre-contact excavation in

Cost

  • A $25 filing fee is required*.

*Why a fee? Shovel Bums is a personal (and time consuming) project I built to serve the archaeology and CRM communities for free by providing easy and quick access to relevant employment information at all levels. Because Field Schools require a fee I charge this nominal amount to cover the costs of preparing the Field School directory, you can think of it as investing in your students future because after facilitating 8,000 jobs in archaeology and CRM in the last 5 years it is likely they will find their employment through here at Shovel Bums, for free.
